LOVE THY ENEMIES..BLESS THOSE WHO PERSECUTE YOU : BISHOP DEREK FERNANDES

 

By Louis Rodrigues – BM Bureau/ Uzwaad : Dec 17 : “ Love thy enemies, bless them” Bishop Derek Fernandes told the protesting Christians in Belagavi on Friday as Christians from different denominations observed a day long fasting as the mark of protest against the proposed  ‘Anti-Conversion Law’ to be implemented by Government of Karnataka. The bill is likely be introduced in this direction early next week during the ongoing ‘Winter Session’ of the Karnataka State Legislature.

Karnataka Sugar Minister Shivaram Hebbar who accepted the memorandum on behalf of the government said that he would bring the plight of Christians in the state to the notice of Chief Minister Bommai on Monday.

Former CM and leader of opposition in Karnataka Assembly Siddaramiah termed the proposed bill as unconstitutional. He also condemned the attacks on Christians in the state criticizing the BJP government stating that safety of citizens is the governments responsibility.

Former MLC and chief whip in the Karnataka Legislative Council Ivan D’souza who played vital role in getting prominent leaders to the fasting venue strongly criticized the BJP government .

After gathering at the Methodist Church Compound here, Christians under the leadership of Bishop Derek Fernandes, former MLC Ivan D’souza, Rev Nandakumar, Prashanth Jathanna left for the designated venue at tent no 5 near Suvarna Soudha. Pastors, priests, nuns and Christians from different parts of Karnataka gathered (about 300 due to restrictions by the police) took part in the protests.

Addressing the protestors Bishop Derek Fernandes quoted the Holy Bible saying ” Love thy enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you…” Bishop Fernandes said while expressing the anguish of the Christians in Karnataka. Rev Nandakumar, Prashanth Jathanna and others too expressed deep concerns over the proposed law by government of Karnataka terming it unnecessary as already such laws prevail in the Indian Constitution.

While sanctity prevailed the protests, spiritual songs and prayers marked the day long protests which culminated at around 4 pm with a hope and anxiety.
